Let’s hear it for park homes!More older people want to spend the winter of their lives in single-storey homes, says planning minister.

Further to the comments in November’s issue of PH&HC (page 94) about the Government’s claim that the number of bungalows needing to be built in Britain is ‘critical’, the Daily Telegraph reported on 31 October that planning minister, Nick Boles, says that the majority of pensioners want to ‘end their days’ in a bungalow.

The planning minister called for more single-storey homes to be built across the country. This, he hoped, would free up larger properties for younger families.  

Admitting that a programme of bungalow development would require councils to open up more land for development, he suggested that local people were less likely to oppose the development of bungalows because of their popularity. He also saw a need for more elderly people to be housed in town centres which would also contribute to solving the problem of ‘dying high streets’.

So once again we say, what’s the difference between a bungalow and a park home? For a start park home estates can be established far more quickly than bungalow developments. The homes themselves are fully furnished and equipped, usually cost less than two thirds of the price of a comparable-sized bungalow, and if not already catering for the needs of the disabled and elderly can easily be adapted to do so.

So, once again this magazine is calling on everyone concerned – trade associations, park owners and developers and manufacturers - to beat a path to the doors of local government officials and the Government itself. As a result of the Mobile Homes Act 2013, local authorities are now more aware of this type of accommodation and its huge benefits, as are MPs – so why hold back?
